I moved into a new apartment in Toronto’s east end (Leslieville) recently. One of the more exciting elements of the move, for me, was the opportunity to set up a more dedicated listening space.
As you can see, I’ve got my amp, turntable, and record cleaning machine all set up atop my record cabinet, which currently holds about 500 records. There is also a shelf just above that currently holds my phono pre-amp, my record cleaning brushes and fluid, dust brush, stylus cleaner, stylus force gauge, and level.
Just above my turntable, I also put up a poster I picked up at the German Historical Museum on a recent trip to Berlin.
My girlfriend suggested that I set up another shelf dedicated to displaying the album I’m listening to at any given time.
I think it’s the perfect touch.
Although you can’t see this in the pictures, I’ve set up my speakers perpendicular to the wall containing my record cabinet and gear. The room is actually quite deep and this allows the speakers to fill up the entire listening area without any limitation. My listening chair is set up in between the speakers at a distance of about two meters (roughly in line with the armoire in the first picture).
Glad to see you’ve returned to blog-land. Even though I’m not a record collector/”vinyl enthusiast”, your entries always make for a good read.
I like the fact that you have a “listening chair”. Is your setup even capable of playing MP3’s or cd’s? How else am I going to come over to your place and fire up Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus?
Oh, it can play mp3s. Whether I’ll permit certain songs to be played is another matter entirely.
