As the infrequency of my posting should indicate, I’ve been away from Toronto recently.
For the last week, I’ve been back in my hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia. Next week I’m off to Paris, France. Please bear with me as I won’t be posting regularly again until early June.
Today I made a trip back to my favourite record store growing up, Zulu Records, in Kitsilano.
Much to my good fortune, I found a healthy stock of used records I was eager to buy – all for relatively cheap.
First, and most ironically, I found the first record put out by influential Toronto punks the Diodes, Diodes, released in 1977. I say ironically because I’ve been keeping my out back in Toronto for it for some time and haven’t been able to find it.
Next, I found two records from English New Wavers, XTC: their first record, White Music (1978); and their best record, English Settlement (1982).
Much to my surprise, I also found a copy of the dB’s second record, Repercussion (1982) in excellent shape for only $4!
Finally, I found a copy of Magazine’s second record, Secondhand Daylight (1979). Magazine was the band Howard Devoto founded after leaving the Buzzcocks in 1977.
All in all, I’m quite pleased with the haul. I’m looking forward to getting back home to give these all a proper cleaning and a long listen.
