Every week or so, I plan to post what I think is the pick of the crop of used records I’ve recently acquired/rescued. I go record hunting at least a few times per week at various record stores in Toronto and take chances here and there on records I covet that happen to show up on Ebay.
The pick of the crop for this week is Big Blue Sky, the 1987 debut album from Canadian prairie rockers The Northern Pikes.
The copy I found at Monster Records for $10 is on blue vinyl.
Many audiophiles tend to eschew coloured vinyl, as it’s perceived to degrade sound quality. That said, most collectors will probably admit that it looks stunning on a turntable.
This album brings back a lot of memories for me. My dad used to play along on his guitar to it regularly back in the days of my youth.
Standout tracks include “Teenland” and “The Things I Do For Money”.
This is still one of my favourites! The Pikes also made videos of a few of the songs from this album….yes, there was television in those days.
